Terschelling — quieter, and further out
A longer ferry crossing than Texel's, and a noticeably slower island once you're there.
Getting there
Terschelling is reached from Harlingen, on the Friesland mainland, with Rederij Doeksen running both a slower car-and-passenger ferry and a faster passenger-only crossing. Either way, it's a meaningfully longer trip than the Texel hop — plan the crossing itself as part of the day, not an afterthought.
West-Terschelling and the Brandaris
The island's main village, West-Terschelling, sits right where the ferry lands, with the Brandaris lighthouse standing over it — one of the older working lighthouses on the Dutch coast and the island's most recognisable landmark. The rest of the island stretches east from here as mostly dunes, forest, and salt marsh (kwelder), with a scattering of smaller villages.
Oerol
Terschelling is also known well beyond the Netherlands for Oerol, a large outdoor theatre and arts festival that takes over the island's landscape — beaches, forests, dunes — for about ten days each June. It's a genuinely different island to visit during the festival than at any other time of year: busier, and booked out for accommodation well in advance.
